About August Wood
The background
August Wood was founded after a period of training in two very different woodworking traditions — Scandinavia and Japan. The two share a seriousness about craft and material that is hard to find elsewhere, but they approach it differently.
The Scandinavian training — in Sweden — brought an emphasis on structural clarity, honest use of material, and clean form that serves function without decoration for its own sake. The Japanese training added a focus on joinery, surface quality, and the kind of patience that genuinely difficult work demands.
Neither tradition is about trends or speed. Both are about work that holds up.
The approach
Every project starts with a conversation about what you actually need — not what might look good in a showroom. The best furniture is often the most restrained: well-proportioned, well-jointed, made from the right material for the job.
I work from a small workshop in London for most pieces, travelling to site for built-in and on-site work. Projects are taken on one at a time where possible, and I don't take on more work than I can do properly.
Where I work
Based in London. I work across the city and into the surrounding area. Built-in and restoration work is done in your home; freestanding pieces are made in the workshop and brought to you.
If you're not sure whether a project is something I can help with, just ask.
